As a part of our Applied Design, Skills, and Technology curriculum, the children had to build their own bears using a tissue box as their bear body. They had to choose the kind of bear that they wanted to make - black bear, grizzly bear, Spirit bear, or polar bear. Their creative thinking helped them build and complete their bears. They had criteria that they had to follow to ensure that their bear had all the important body parts.
We did a lot of learning during our unit of study on bears. After we looked through many information books on bears, the class created a list of 'wonder questions' - things that the children wanted to know more about. Each student created their own three wonder questions that they wanted to get more information about. Throughout our theme, we recorded answers to these questions when we came across them when we were reading books or looking at videos. The children each had to present their Bear Reports with the answers to their wonder questions to the class. To make it more fun we used a green screen to create the backdrop. The children got to choose their background for their presentation. They turned out pretty great!! Once our bears were complete, we 'brought them to life' using the app Chatterpix. We recorded the children's voices talking as if they were the bear. They had to give their bear a name, tell what kind of bear they are, and explain three facts that they know about their bear. Parents, I sent you an email with your child's Chatterpix bear. Each child made a sponge-painted bear for our class mural. Together we brainstormed different things that we would find in the bears' environment. The children all made items to complete the mural.
