Make your own earth using loose parts: Our pledge to help the earth: Water Presentation Jaimi came from the City of Kamloops and did a presentation on water in our city. WE learned about the water cycle, the many different ways that we use water, ways to take care of our water, how water moves through our city, and about our water treatment plant. We really enjoyed seeing it in action in her giant water table! Leading up to Earth Day, we decided to go out and clean up the earth.

Our third Coding lesson was all about trying to Code on the Chromebooks with a partner.
Not only were the children writing Code to move their little 'Flurb' around on the grid, they were also learning to co-operate and share with their partner. One got to be the 'driver' who worked the computer while the other got to be the helper. Then they got to switch roles. Sometimes it can be very tricky when you want to work the computer but it isn't your turn!! The children did a great job of working together and showing the virtue of patience! The children were involved in a number colour blending experiences. It's one thing for us to read about making secondary colours from primary colours, but it's better for us to do it and see it for ourselves. So the children made rainbows using the three primary colours. How did we get six colours from three? By leaving spaces between each colour and then carefully blending them together. They also spent a lot of time with eyedroppers and coloured water creating many new colours. Rainbows are popping up everywhere: We've enjoyed building with the Rainbow Blocks. It's been fun using the flashlight and seeing how by putting blocks close together the colours change! We even got to EAT rainbows. Fruit kebab rainbows on a stick! As a part of math we did some graphing using Smarties. The children each got their own little box of Smarties and then had to create a graph with the colours of the Smarties in their box. Interesting how different each graph was. We then asked these questions: Which colour was the most? Which colour was the least? and Are there any colours that are the same? All of these are math concepts that we are working on. The best part was when we got to eat them! Mmmm! We shared our results with a partner: Rainbow flowers:
We had tons of fun during our first gymnastics session! During our second Coding lesson with Mrs. Sauer we continued to work on making code, reading code, and moving people on the floor grid. Then we practiced writing Code for 'Flurb' on the Smart Board. Then with partners, the children got to play the 'Flurb Game' to try and move him around to get his food. The had to program the arrows correctly so that he could find all the different foods.
Last Friday all schools in the school district honoured the Aboriginal culture by celebrating the Day of Sucwentwecw. Leading up to the day all of the students made their own talking sticks. They are used in many Indigenous cultures and are communication tools that are used during gatherings. The person holding the stick, and only that person, is designated as having the right to speak and all others must listen quietly and respectfully. Talking sticks are most frequently used in council circles, ceremonies and at the beginning of cultural events such as potlatches and in storytelling circles. We used a variety of materials to decorate our sticks. The focus of this day was on “Reconciliation”. We read a First Nations a story about an elder couple who, with the help of animals and nature, look to find a way to remember their culture in the past. We talked a lot about nature and things found in nature. We created a list of “Symbols of Nature” – in the sky, on the land, and animals. With our Big Buddies we made teepees out of paper bags and used some of these symbols to decorate them. As a part of our Applied Design, Skills and Technology curriculum, we began a unit of study on Coding with Mrs. Sauer, our Teacher-Librarian. The children had fun understanding directions and how to "program" or tell something or someone how to move. We even followed 'code' ourselves - on the carpet and then on a grid mat.
We had lots of fun getting ready for Easter. We dyed Easter eggs: Our Big Buddies sent us on an Easter egg hunt: We made bunny ears......and got ready to do the bunny hop with the rest of the school... ...and with our Big Buddies!
We created some questions or "wonders" about the season of Spring. We even practiced posing with our "wonder" face. Check out our Wonder Board! |
AuthorI'm Mrs. MacDonald. Welcome to a window into our kindergarten classroom. My goal of this blog is to give you an opportunity to see some of the things that we are doing at school. Enjoy! Archives
