Math theme: We made shapes using elastics and geoboards, counted objects, made numbers using different items, and played "flip, make it, and build it".

Wednesday, February 23rd was Pink Shirt Day. We talked about what that meant and why we honour that day. We talked about Bully Behaviour and what it could look like, sound like, and feel like. The children made foam pink shirt necklaces as well as kindness crowns to wear on the day. They each wrote an important message on theirs. Together we talked about kindness and what it looks like and feels like. The children each made a kindness heart telling what kindness is for them.
It's hard to believe but we celebrated our 100th day of Kindergarten. Time flies!! We were involved in a variety of activities throughout the day (and also the rest of the week!). We walked through the door 100 days smarter! We started the day by making a banner with 100 bear paws. We found it easiest to count them when we grouped them into groups of ten. Then we made our 100 day crowns: We did a wide variety of activities related to the number 100 - made a 100-loop chain, had fun building with our 100 cups, made 100 Day glasses, weighed our 100 collections, measured things in the classroom that were 100 centimetres, did 100 polka dot painting, made 100 gumballs with bingo daubers, and did shape finding. It was a busy day of counting!!
Playing Pass the Heart. Don't drop it! You're not allowed to use your hands to take the heart and pass it - you can only use the clothes peg. It's good fine motor practice - it can be tricky!! Finding the other half to our "broken hearts": Opening our Valentine cards is always fun! Morning Table Tubs Valentine's theme: Class Compliment CentreWe practiced our printing at our Compliment Centre. The children wrote multiple compliments to their classmates. On Valentine's Day, we gathered together, I read them all out, and we posted them on our 'Kindness' board (sorry I forgot to get a photo!). It was such a bucket-filler hearing such kind words about ourselves!
This was what greeted the students in preparation for Chinese New Year - our table of Chinese "artifacts". This is called provocation - a way to provoke the curiosity and interest of students. We opened the Westmount Chinese Restaurant in our Dramatic Play area. The children enjoyed serving the "food". We had "dine-in" or "take out" options. Our Chinese food at our playhouse was a great place to practice using chopsticks. What a challenge! The children practiced role-playing financial transactions using our play money and cash register. Our Chinese lanterns: Making our dragon crowns for our Lunar New Year lunch: Lunar New Year Lunch We finished off our Chinese New Year theme by joining our friends in Mrs. Zirnhelt's Grade Two class for a Chinese lunch. Following Chinese tradition we brought our friends a gift - an orange, which is a symbol of good luck and wealth. It was a great experience for the children to try foods that many had not tried before!
