We are continuing on our egg countdown. We still have about one week left to go before chicks should start to arrive. We have been using our cross-section egg models to get an idea of what is happening inside the eggs. We have been comparing the changes each day to observe how the chicks change and grow through the 21-day development. We have also been counting down with our "chicken facts". Each day that we count down we read a new fact about chickens. They are very interesting! This week B.'s Mom came into the class and "candled" some of the eggs. Candling is done in a darkened room with the egg held before a light. The light penetrates the egg and makes it possible to observe the inside of the egg. The children all had a chance to see the shadows of the inside of some of our eggs. So far, they are looking very good! Fingers crossed that they continue to grow and develop. This past week our "Chick theme" focus was on comparing animals that are born alive to animals that are hatched from eggs. The book Chickens Aren't The Only Ones was full of great information that helped us sort and categorize animals. The children each created their own Chickens Aren't The Only Ones booklets and they brought them home this weekend. Get your child to read it to you!
