We love our 'Pete the Cat' books! The children each made their own page of their favourite colour shoes. We then compiled them into class books. The children sure enjoy reading them during our Book Times. Ask your child what colour s/he did his/her shoes.

Thanksgiving activities: Our cork-print and hand turkeys: After Thanksgiving we created a graph about turkey dinner:
We read the book "Have You Filled A Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud. The book explains that everyone carries an invisible bucket that contains our feelings. When our buckets are full, we feel great but when our buckets are empty, we feel sad. In the classroom we have been focusing on being "bucket fillers" - someone who says or does nice things for other people. By being bucket fillers, the children not only fill other people's buckets but also their own at the same time. The children each created their own buckets and gave some examples of what fills their buckets. We also learned about "bucket dippers". A bucket dipper says or does things to cause other people to feel bad. A bucket dipper empties their bucket when they say and do mean things. We are learning to be bucket fillers not dippers!! We read some scenarios and decided if they were "bucket fillers or "bucket dippers". We decided that we want to be a bucket filling class, so we took the bucket filling pledge. We are working at trying to fill our class bucket - every time someone does something that fills our buckets and makes us feel good, we put a jewel into our class bucket. Hopefully we can fill it by the end of the year!!
We've been doing a variety of activities related to apple season. The children all made tissue paper apple trees. Our finished trees: At our Discover Center we've been checking out different kinds of apples... ...and matching our apples to their name cards. We taste-tested some of the different kinds of apples and then graphed our favourite. Mrs. Zirnhelt's class came to visit and we talked about the different parts of the apple. We found the star inside! It has an important job - to hold the seeds! We then cut up our apples, put them in a pot and cooked them. We used our apple press to make them into applesauce. After the children tried the applesauce they completed our taste-tester sheet. Make sure that you check out your child's sheet to see what your child thought of it.
We decided to make our class tree an apple tree since it is apple season. The children all traced and cut out their apples on the first day. It's tough work tracing and cutting! Then we decided that it would be nice to put our faces on our apples. Our finished tree:
Ms. Bennett, our School Aboriginal Education Worker, came into our class and did a lesson with the students about salmon. We discussed the importance of keeping their habitat clean and healthy. The children all made their own stream habitats and created the swimming salmon using a magnetic "magic wand".
We took part in National Orange Shirt day to remember and honour Aboriginal students from Residential Schools. We read the book "Shi-shi-etko" about a little girl who was getting ready to go to a Residential School. We talked about how it was a bit scary for us when we started school. Shi-shi-etko had to leave her family to go to school and we all agreed how hard that would have been! We discussed how "Every Child Matters" and how we wanted to honour all those children who had to leave their families to go to school. We made orange shirts. The children have had a chance to practice fine motor activities in the classroom. With our Fine Motor Flowers, the children have to use the various tongs to move the pom poms to finish making the flowers. No hands!!
