I use a thematic approach to teaching to meet the five goals of the Primary Program. We have been discussing and noticing the changes that are taking place during the season of autumn. On October 1 we were truly entertained by the group Ache Brazil who came to our school as a part of our Fine Arts Performance Series. The danced, sang, and played different instruments as a part of their show. Even one of our kindergarten friends was chosen to go up and do the samba!! It was very exciting! We have a few different Book Times during the day. We have a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books as well as our big books. Re-telling the stories by memory or by using picture clues are great beginning reading strategies. During some of the Book Times the children can share books with friends or look at them on their own. After lunch we always have Quiet Book Time. This is the time when the children take 2 or 3 books to their blankets and look at the books independently. We usually dim the lights and have quiet music playing in the afternoon. By this time of the day, some of the children just prefer to have a quiet rest. We participated in the Terry Fox Run this past week. The whole school assembled in the gym to watch a short video on Terry Fox. Then some of the grade 7s led us through a warm up before the big run! Thanks to all of the families for supporting the Terry Fox Foundation by sending money. The school collected over $300!!
We met Andy Alligator this week. Everyday he brings a new friend for us to meet. Ask your child to tell you about some of the friends who we have met so far. See if s/he can sing some of their songs!
We've been practicing our fire drill. We have done it a couple of times by ourselves but this past week we did one with the whole school. We are getting very good at it! Next week we will be doing a "surprise" one when the Fire Department comes.
Here are some of the things the children said that we need to remember when we do our fire drill at school:
It has sure been a busy time for the children. There are lots of new friends to meet, new routines and expectations to learn, and new things to try. It's a lot to learn but they are working hard! The Importance of Play The children have been enjoying the opportunity to try many of the new centres offered during Activity Time. During this time in our day the children practice and develop their social skills. They are learning to take turns, share, co-operate, be patient, problem solve, and practice their social language - such as "please" and "thank you". Play is a child’s work; their way of learning. Through their play, children develop sensory motor control, eye-hand coordination and problem-solving skills. Physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development are all enhanced through play. Research has shown that play:
