After reading The Mitten we decided to make our own mittens. We created a chart of different kinds of lines and shapes. Then, using crayons, we used some of the lines and shapes to decorate our mittens. The final step was the 'magic' part. We painted them with water - yes water - but they each came out a lovely pastel colour. Ask your child why that happened. Check them out:

So we asked a question: Then we made a graph. Our graph was a little bit different than usual. Each child got to 'hang' their answer.
We conducted a science experiment this week. We filled two bottles with water (& added food colouring so that we could see it better) up to the green arrows. Then we froze one of the bottles and left the other one in our classroom. We made some predictions about what we thought would happen.
Mrs. Sauer came into our classroom to teach us about Speed Stacking. We sure had fun trying to make the two different types of tower formations. A 3-3-3 formation and a 3-6-3 formation. It was lots of fun trying! It was very tricky but many of the children caught on quickly. For those who choose, they can join the Speed Stack Club that practices during the first part of lunch on Wednesdays. Mr. Levitt, our school Math Support Teacher, came and taught us some new partner dice games this week. Not only did we practice counting and doing math, we practiced our social skills by working with a partner. This week we did a short literature study of the book The Mitten by Jan Brett. We have read the story a number of times and, using masks, the children re-enacted the story using our large mitten.
Estimating As a part of math we have been practicing our estimating skills. The children had to guess how many 'snowballs' were in each jar. How many do you think there are? Here were our guesses. The actual number is circled in red. We had some very good guesses. How did you do?
The Cat In The Hat came to visit us on our first day back from our Winter Break. January is Literacy Month and the School District will be filling the Honda truck as full as possible with books. We are encouraging families to donate gently used books to "Heap the Honda".
